Healthy grilling for Memorial Day weekend!

Happy Memorial Day weekend everyone!  This weekend represents the heralding of summer for me, and all the happy memories that go with it.  We always go down the Cape to Marstons Mills to my parents’ house and have a BBQ with the family- it’s a tradition that we’ve kept up for as long as I can remember. When I came across this article, I thought it was apropros for the season. It has some interesting information about grilling meats, specifically how charring can cause certain harmful chemicals in the meat, which can be counteracted by using herbs, specifically rosemary and thyme. It also details why avoiding grilling meats beyond a medium rare to medium point is a better idea than making them well done. Check out this link to learn more about this. I love a good BBQ, and contrary to what many people may think, I enjoy meat, although I eat it only occasionally. The most recent literature promotes eating  fish, poultry, vegetables, fruit, along with some whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds for the healthiest diet, while limiting sugar and saturated fats in excess. For dinner, I eat about 4-6 ounces of protein, and at least half a plate of vegetables.  I no longer eat much rice, potatoes, or any starches with dinner. It leaves me feeling satiated, with no craving for anything else (except a little dark chocolate, which also has anti-oxidants- in moderation, of course). With holidays, I enjoy some BBQ, but usually include roasted vegetables on the grill, drizzled with some olive oil. Now I’m spicing my vegetables, as I learned that if I like them charred, spices can diminish the negative effects.
So bon appetit- enjoy the weather that should improve dramatically tomorrow, and don’t forget to spice up your food!
Yours in health!
